Launches Best Digital Product or Service Award

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 5, 2017) – During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group celebrated its 20th anniversary at its annual reception and awarded top honors for digital entertainment products.

The DEG Emiel N. Petrone Innovation Awards

In memory of the DEG’s founding Chairman Emiel N. Petrone, the DEG has four awards to acknowledge the year’s most outstanding digital entertainment products released in calendar 2016 in the categories of Best 4K Ultra HD TV, Best Sound Bar, Best Ultra HD Blu-ray Player and Best Hi-Res Audio Product. Selected by a panel of product reviewers from the industry’s home theater enthusiast publications, the following four products will be awarded with the top honors:

Best 4K Ultra HD TV: LG OLED B6

Best Sound Bar: Samsung HW-K950 Soundbar with Dolby Atmos

Best Ultra HD Blu-ray Player: Samsung UBD-K8500 Blu-ray Player

Best Hi-Res Audio Product: Onkyo DP-X1 Portable Hi-Res Music Player

Additionally, the DEG introduced an award for Best Digital Product or Service Innovation. Nominations were culled from the DEG membership who also voted for the slate of nominees. Sonopress, a new member of DEG, won for their Ultra HD Blu-ray 100 GB Disc. This award recognizes the development of an integral-fully-automated replication line for the optical disc format Ultra HD BD 100, the so-called triple layer disc, with capacity of 100 GB. This follows the dual layer disc UHD BD 66 which was available in market earlier in 2016. The release of the Warner Bros.’ title, Batman vs. Superman, marked the first mass-produced title of the triple layer Ultra HD disc. The new configured production line was developed entirely in-house at Sonopress with its engineers and technicians.

“As the industry pivots to meet consumer demands for more innovative and diverse forms of delivering content, so too, must we provide a seamless and frictionless means to bring content to consumers,” said Amy Jo Smith, President, DEG. “We are delighted to recognize Sonopress with the inaugural DEG Digital Product Innovation Award for its part in bringing 4K Ultra HD into the home in a more robust fashion.”

DEG Creative Excellence Awards

The DEG also awarded seven awards to acknowledge Creative Excellence in Blu-ray Disc and Digital HD titles released in calendar 2016. The judging panel consisted of reviewers and industry reporters from trade, entertainment and daily consumer news organizations. In addition to overall sound and picture quality, all titles were considered for those features that best demonstrate the value-added nature of the formats.
