About This Project

In the same way that Blu-ray rode into homes with HDTV a decade ago, giving viewers the single best viewing experience in true, full 1080p high-definition, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is poised to give consumers who upgrade to 4K UHD TV the best experience in immersive viewing with four times the resolution of standard Blu-ray. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray builds on the qualities that have made standard Blu-ray the preeminent home entertainment delivery format – quality, capacity and versatility.

For standard Blu-ray first and then 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, DEG in cooperation with the major studios developed artwork and other design elements for packaging as a way to drive more rapid adoption of the formats and greater overall consistence in merchandising and messaging.

DEG has worked closely with member companies to expand the availability of 4K delivery platforms to the home, including developing supply chain and packaging standards, as well as industry consumer outreach programs. This included development, with the major studios, of “future proof” standard packaging for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray that conforms to retail display requirements, yet effectively differentiates 4K Ultra HD movies from standard Blu-ray titles and aligns with CTA’s 4K Ultra HD messaging for TVs. To help support these initiatives, DEG and CTA partnered to deliver the 4K Ultra HD message to consumers nationwide as part of a series of satellite media tours with TV and radio personality Ben Lyons.

One year after launch, there were 139 4K Ultra HD titles available for sale, DEG estimated in its First Quarter 2017 Home Entertainment Report, and those titles collectively sold about 900,000 units during first quarter 2017.
